Biodiversity in the forest
The forest is home to a wide range of organisms. Everything from fungi and plants to insects and wildlife. By maintaining a constant dynamic in natural forests, better conditions are created for natural habitats and ecosystems to develop. This promotes local biodiversity in your forest.
Forestry and biodiversity in interaction
Every forest is unique. At the same time, as a forest owner, you have specific wishes and goals for your forest’s functions. Multifunctional use of forest areas provides great value, meaning you can enhance the natural value of the forest while also using the area for production and recreational purposes.
The forest has a lot to offer. This can include ornamental greenery, building materials, and energy. Additionally, the forest can help protect our groundwater and serve as a tool against climate change by ensuring carbon sequestration.
How can your forest contribute to biodiversity?
As a forest owner, you can choose to emphasise different aspects of the forest’s functions. To enhance the natural value for the species living in your forest, there are a number of practical measures you can implement.
Measures can include:
- Preserving and promoting veteran trees and actively creating more deadwood
- stablishing or maintaining forest meadows and clearings
- Full or partial grazing with livestock to inhibit overgrowth and support biological diversity
- Designating areas as untouched, possibly with measures to prepare the area
- Initiatives targeted at one or more endangered species
Documentation of measures
We recommend that you document the effects of the measures you implement for biodiversity. This adds credibility. The data can support you when you inform the outside world that your forest has contributed to promoting biodiversity.
If your measures are also validated by an independent third party, we can help you achieve an Ecosystem Services Certification, FSC®.
Your local forester from Dalgas will provide guidance and suggestions for measures that will enhance the natural value and advise on the specific opportunities available in your forest.
